Bobcats introduce Dunlap as new head coach

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) ? Mike Dunlap's reputation as a 'crazy worker' was among the things that impressed the Charlotte Bobcats.

The team formally introduced Dunlap as the fifth coach in the franchise's eight-year history on Wednesday, and immediately began talking about changing the franchise's culture of losing.

The Bobcats finished 7-59 last season for the worst winning percentage in NBA history, and chose not to renew the contract of Paul Silas after the season ended.

"After going through the process, we really felt strongly that this is the right guy to take us into the future," president of basketball operations Rod Higgins said.

The Bobcats interviewed 10 candidates for the post and brought back three for second interviews ? Dunlap, Indiana Pacers assistant Brian Shaw, and Los Angeles Lakers assistant Quin Snyder.

Dunlap, 54, spent last season as an assistant at St. John's and ran the program while coach Steve Lavin battled prostate cancer.

General manager Rich Cho said that Dunlap's work ethic stood out.

"Really, the three primary things we were looking for were player development, a teacher, and somebody to set the culture for this organization," Cho said. "If you look around the league, the best organizations have a certain culture and the first thing about the culture is to rely on hard work.

"The thing that really jumped out is that he's a big-time worker, the first guy in and the last guy out. He's just a crazy worker. That kind of stuff is infectious among the staff and the players, so that will set the culture for us. Mike's going to be very demanding. I know one thing, they're going to be in shape."

Bobcats owner Michael Jordan did not attend the news conference.

Dunlap has just two seasons of NBA experience in his 32-year coaching career. He was an assistant with the Denver Nuggets from 2006-08. Prior to that, he served as head coach at Metropolitan State in Denver, winning two NCAA Division II championships. He has also been a head coach at California Lutheran and for Adelaide of the Australian NBL. He has served as an assistant at Arizona, Oregon, Loyola Marymount, Iowa, Southern California, and the last two seasons at St. John's.

"Basically the three things I tried to nail down as a theme was one, my knowledge base, two my relationships with players over a long period of time, 32 years, and finally the ability to take a branding that obviously the organization wants," Dunlap said. "We'll open this up a little bit with the youth, develop the youth, and bring it along so that people can actually see that we play a style of basketball that's very aggressive. It's attacking basketball both offensively and defensively. And that's a message that obviously resonated with them."

Dunlap will inherit a core of young players that include point guards D.J. Augustin and Kemba Walker, shooting guard Gerald Henderson, and power forward Bismack Biyombo. The Bobcats also have the No. 2 overall pick in the June 28 NBA Draft, and could clear as much as $21 million in salary cap space to use in free agency.

"I think it's a team that can push the ball down the floor," Dunlap said. "What we have at point guard in Augustin and Walker, obviously that's a great start. I like how they play. I like what they are as far as personalities. They're quarterbacks. I think they can get better and I believe they will get better.

"So I think the team has components. And I think everyone understands that with the draft pick being No. 2, that's exciting and we're going to get some more youth in there. And it's how our staff matches up to that youth. We've got to be frank about that. We have to say sometimes we're going to fall down and skin our knees, and we're going to run into some walls. But you certainly need somebody who's optimistic, who's positive, and who keeps working away. And it's an inch-by-inch process. It doesn't happen overnight."

As part of developing a new culture, the Bobcats unveiled new uniforms with a change in color scheme. Navy blue will now be the dominant color, light blue will be the secondary color, and orange will be minimized. In the past, a shade of grayish-blue was the dominant color and orange was used prominently.

'Fringe' Co-Showrunner Exits Ahead Of Final Season

Jeff Pinkner will not return in any capacity for the fifth and final season of 'Fringe,' creator J.J. Abrams confirms in a statement.
By Josh Wigler

Cast of 'Fringe'

There is a universe in which longtime "Fringe" co-showrunners Jeff Pinkner and J.H. Wyman both stick around to see the story through, but we don't live there.

TVGuide.com reports that Pinkner is exiting "Fringe" ahead of the low-rated but critically worshipped sci-fi series' 13-episode final season "to pursue other projects." Though "Fringe" and Pinkner's separation was apparently "an amicable split," it's nevertheless a shocker for longtime fans: Pinkner has been with the show since the beginning, acting as sole showrunner during season one before sharing that title with Wyman from season two onward. Put another way, a final season of "Fringe" without Pinkner is like a final season of "Lost" without Damon Lindelof: a troubling thought to consider, though some may disagree given the latter show's massively divisive ending.

In a statement, "Fringe" creator J.J. Abrams remained optimistic about the show's upcoming swan song. "We're so excited to begin work on a fifth season of 'Fringe' and to be able to deliver the 13 final episodes to our passionate and devoted fans," he said of the news. "For four years, J.H. Wyman and Jeff Pinkner have worked tirelessly as a team to keep all the worlds in order on 'Fringe.' We're thankful for the invaluable contributions Jeff has made to the show and of course wish him well and look forward to working together in the future. J.H. Wyman's importance to 'Fringe' cannot be overstated, however, and I'm thrilled that he will continue as showrunner for the concluding chapters of our story. We can't wait for our fans to see what we have in store for them in the wild conclusion of 'Fringe.'"

"I will be here until the last frame. We always encourage everyone to pursue their creative paths," Wyman said of the news on Twitter. "This goes for Jeff too. My commitment is to Fringe and our incredible fans."

Though Pinkner's exit is a bitter pill to swallow, "Fringe" fans can take comfort in some newly released details about the show's final season. Series lead John Noble, who plays the wonderfully bizarre Doctor Walter Bishop, confirmed in an interview with TV Line that season five would take place during the Observer-controlled future of 2036 first seen in the fan-favorite season four episode "Letters of Transit." References to the past and even "found footage" will fill the gaps between the fourth season finale and the fifth season's future world of 2036, according to Noble.

"Walter, Olivia, Astrid and Peter are insurgents, so we know all the dirty tricks that have been played against us," Noble said of the supposed new time period. "We'll be learning from the past."

Though Noble's comments have not been confirmed by the show's creators, the title of the season five premiere — "Transilience Thought Unifier Model-11," as revealed by Wyman — fits rather comfortably with the actor's vision of the Observer-filled future. If anything will heal the wound of losing Pinkner, it's a full "Fringe" season dedicated to war against those bald, hot sauce-craving creeps.

Visualized Nokia Lumia 900 running Windows Phone 78

It may not be the mysterious prototype Joe Belfiore showed off at today's Windows Phone Developer Summit keynote, but it's a nice treat nonetheless: we had the opportunity to sneak a peek at an AT&T-branded Nokia Lumia 900 running Windows Phone 7.8, complete with the brand new Start screen. Because it's at such early stages in the development game, we weren't able to get our own grubby hands on the device and play around with any of the highlighted features, but it was still great to see it working on a real, honest-to-goodness device. What other secrets this software holds will remain that way for now, but we can certainly look forward to an action-packed summer full of interesting revelations.

Update: We were able to snap a few extra images of this very same Lumia 900, but we weren't allowed to touch the screen or interact with the software in any way, since the build we saw of Windows Phone 7.8 is just a special version highlighting the Start screen and is nowhere near final production quality. For what it's worth, we had the opportunity to view a demo of the tiles being resized, and we couldn't detect any flaws in its execution. Check out the full gallery of precious pics below!

Shaka turns smartphones into wind meters, gives surfers and kiteboarders the gnar they need handson

Ever missed an amazing set in spite of your sick surfboard because you packed it in not knowing that the wind was picking up and about to deliver the perfect wave? Or maybe you didn't realize just how hard the breeze was blowing and as a result, your tee shot wound up deep in the rough. Good news, sporting friends, because start-up company Shaka is here to make you more air-aware with a wind meter that plugs into the 3.5mm jack on your smartphone. It's a small, plastic fan, not much bigger than a box of matches, that pairs with the company's app to deliver wind speed and direction wherever you are -- and it works by simply holding the thing up in a stiff breeze. The app then keeps a record of all your measurements and allows you to share them via your favorite social networks. Not only that, it also overlays the results on a map so you can see where the wind is just right for all your favorite wind-reliant activities. It's currently iOS-only, but we're told Android and Windows Phone versions are in the works as well. The price for knowing when wind perfection is upon you? For now Shaka's seeking to sell them for around $59 bucks, but that could change if the powers that be (read: investors) decide otherwise.

PFT: Ochocinco hopes to turn back clock

Chad OchocincoAP

Chad Ochocinco is changing his name, again.? Or at least his style.

Again.

In his first media availability as a member of the Miami Dolphins, Ochocinco said he plans to revert to the attitude that made him what he was, earlier in his career.

?It?s about my getting back to the basics, going back to the root of how it all started,? Ochocinco told reporters Tuesday, via video remarks posted at the team?s website.? ?Not as far as playing at home in Miami but as far as my game goes, and getting back to what we?re all used to seeing.? You know, the basic fundamentals of how I became what I am.? I think I kind of lost that, and I?m looking to go back to Chad Johnson and just make it live again.?

He?s right that he ?kind of lost? who he was, whether because he was trying to hard too fit in with a Patriots team that looks down on a player drawing too much attention to himself.? Chad constantly seemed to be paralyzed by fear of saying the wrong thing, running the wrong route, rubbing someone the wrong way.

Ochocinco also seemed a bit restrained in his Tuesday remarks, but a hint of the old Chad came through from time to time.? Like when Chad said he?s ?developing Brokeback Mountain-type chemistry with the players,? a term he once used in Cincinnati to describe his relationship with quarterback Carson Palmer.

Chad also playfully deflected whether he?ll be the team?s No. 1 receiver:? ?I was never good in math, so I?m not good with numbers, either.?

He also articulated an important reason for joining the Dolphins.? He said that Miami always has been his team of choice when playing video football.

?Since 1988, I?ve always played Madden, I?ve always used the Dolphins, no matter where I was, no matter where I was playing,? Chad said.

It will likely be slightly more complicated than a game of Madden for Chad to get back to being the guy he once was.? Whether that happens depends in large part on how much the Dolphins are willing to encourage him to be himself.

In China, one giant leap for womankind?

Not really. Even as China launched a woman into space, it was condemned for forcing another woman to have a late-term abortion.

Major Liu Yang?s breakthrough as China?s first female astronaut and her current exploits in space aboard China?s experimental spacelab are symbolically important but irrelevant to most Chinese women, say scholars and feminists here. In a country where gender equality is a pillar of official political rhetoric, some key aspects of women?s status are being eroded.

The saturation press coverage that Major Liu has attracted since she blasted off last Saturday offers revealing insights into contemporary Chinese values.

Few of the gushing profiles have played up the qualities normally associated with a pilot/astronaut at the cutting edge of space science; instead one article by Xinhua, the state news agency, began simply ?She is a wife.?

Another, in the state-owned China Daily, stressed how ?modest and obedient? Liu had been as a girl.

Such traditionally feminine virtues are still highly prized in Chinese women, 60 years after the country?s Constitution declared that ?women enjoy equal rights with men in all spheres of life.?

Indeed, official figures suggest that some of the economic, social, and political gains that women made in China during the first decades after the 1949 revolution are being rolled back.

?There is an imbalance in the way women?s social status has developed,? worries Jiang Yongping, a researcher at the government-sponsored Chinese Institute for Women?s Studies. ?We see a group of educated and very successful women like Liu Yang who achieve great things, but in the less developed areas of China women?s education and health are still in bad shape.?

Survey says

Nor are social attitudes encouraging for women?s rights advocates. A nationwide official survey published last year found that the number of men ? and women ? who believe that ?a woman?s place is in the home and the public sphere is for men? is on the rise: 62 percent of men believe that, up from 54 percent a decade ago, and 55 percent of women agree, up from 50 percent in 2000.

Another key metric, income, also suggests that women are losing ground to men, even as they grow wealthier overall from China?s economic boom. Twenty years ago rural women earned 79 percent of men?s wages; today they earn just 56 percent. In cities the proportion has dropped from 78 percent to 67 percent.

The survey also found signs of progress; the average Chinese woman today has been to school for nearly nine years, three years more than a decade ago and almost as long as the average man. The number of women reporting health checks has increased substantially.

?Clearly there has been huge progress in women?s social status since 1949,? when the revolution swept away feudal traditions such as footbinding, concubinage, and forced marriage, says Ms. Jiang.

Nikon D3200

The Nikon D3200 ($699.95 direct with 18-55mm lens) is the company's entry-level D-SLR, and as such offers a wealth of features that should appeal to photographers in search of their first interchangeable lens camera. The 24-megapixel shooter improves upon the 14-megapixel resolution of the D3100 ($699.95, 4 stars) and also provides full manual shooting controls for seasoned shutterbugs. It does well in low light, and offers continuous autofocus during video recording, but doesn't quite oust our current under-$1,000 Editors' Choice D-SLR, the Nikon D5100 ($899.99, 4.5 stars),?with its broader feature set including a sharp, articulating rear LCD.

Design and Features
Even though it dwarfs point-and-shoot cameras, the D3200 ?is quite compact for an SLR. The body measures 3.8 by 5.0 by 3.1 inches and weighs an even pound (sans lens), slightly smaller than the 3.9-by-5.1-by-3.1, 1.1-pound Canon EOS Rebel T3 ($599.99, 3.5 stars). Even though the included 18-55mm (27-82.5mm equivalent) zoom lens is small compared with professional telephoto zoom lenses, it feels larger than it is when mounted on the small camera.

The biggest advantage that an SLR has over a mirrorless compact interchangeable lens camera like the Sony Alpha NEX-F3 ($599.99, 4.5 stars) is its optical viewfinder. While you do have the option of adding an EVF to many mirrorless compacts, it isn't the same as looking through the lens. However, like most other entry-level SLRs, the D3200 skimps a bit on viewfinder quality. It uses a pentamirror design, which uses a series of mirrors to direct the light captured by the lens to your eye. Enthusiast and professional D-SLRs, like the Pentax K-5 ($1,249.95, 3.5 stars) and Nikon D800 ($2,999.95, 4 stars), use a solid glass pentaprism to redirect the light, which results in a larger, brighter image. If you're accustomed to a point-and-shoot, the D3200's viewfinder will be a huge step up, but old-school photographers may be surprised at just how small the finder is compared with classic 35mm SLRs.

If you have a stable of old Nikkor lenses that you would like to put to use on a digital body, you'll be happy to know that pretty much any lens manufactured after 1977 will mount on the D3200. Most, even those that support screw-drive autofocus, will be limited to manual focus mode only?the D3200 doesn't have a focus screw to support these lenses that lack internal focus motors. Couple that with the relatively small viewfinder, and you'll quickly realize that this was not a camera that was designed with manual focus in mind. If you have autofocus Nikon lenses without internal motors, you should consider the D5100 , since it includes the hardware needed to focus them.

If, on the other hand, you're a complete novice, you'll like the D3200's killer feature?its Guide Mode. Switching the Mode Dial to Guide brings up a colorful menu on the rear display that asks you if you'd like to shoot, review photos, or configure the camera. The Shoot menu is broken up into Easy and Advanced situations which feature presets for landscapes, close ups, low light portraits, fast action, and other common photographic subjects. This, along with select number of scene modes that live on the Mode Dial, goes a long way into configuring the camera to best capture the image at hand, without the need for encyclopedic knowledge of photographic technique.

The D3200's shooting controls are scattered about its body. The Movie Record, Info, and EV Compensation buttons are located directly behind the shutter release, and you'll only find a four-way controller, Drive Mode control, Exposure Lock, and Live View button on the rear of the camera. The button to raise the flash and control its output, as well as a Function button, round out the shooting controls?they both live on the front left of the camera, right above the Lens Release button.

Aside from EV Compensation, shutter speed, and aperture, which are visible in the viewfinder, you'll need to use the rear 3-inch LCD to view settings as you adjust them. The 4:3 display is quite bright and sharp thanks to a 921k-dot resolution, but it doesn't tilt away from the camera's body like that of the Canon EOS Rebel T3i ($899.99, 3.5 stars) or the Sony Alpha 65 ($999.99, 4 stars). Hitting the I button, which is located to the left of the LCD, gives you quick access to Image Quality, White Balance, ISO, Drive Mode, Focus Mode, AF Area, Metering, EV Compensation, Flash Compensation, and Flash Mode. If you need to adjust anything else, you'll have to dive into the full menu.

The weight of nations: An estimation of adult human biomass

ScienceDaily (June 18, 2012) ? The world population is over seven billion and all of these people need feeding. However, the energy requirement of a species depends not only on numbers but on its average mass. New research published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Public Health has estimated the total mass of the human population, defined its distribution by region, and the proportion of this biomass due to the overweight and obesity.

Up to half of all food eaten is burned up in physical activity. Increasing mass means higher energy requirements, because it takes more energy to move a heavy body. Even at rest a bigger body burns more energy.

Using data from the United Nations and World Health Organization, researchers from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine estimated that the adult human population weights in at 287 million tonnes. 15 millions of which is due to the overweight and 3.5 million due to obesity.

While the average body mass globally was 62kg, North America, which has the highest body mass of any continent, with an average body mass of 80.7kg. North America has only 6% of the world's population but 34% of the world's biomass mass due to obesity. In contrast Asia has 61% of the world's population but only 13% of the world's biomass due to obesity.

If all countries had the same average BMI as the USA the total human biomass would increase by 58 million tonnes -- this is the equivalent of an additional 935 million people of world average body mass.

Explaining the implications of this study Sarah Walpole said, "Our results emphasize the importance of looking at biomass rather than just population numbers when considering the ecological impact of a species, especially humans."

This study was based on the 2005 WHO SURF report so it is an underestimate of the current situation. The world's population is continuing to increase in size -- the UN predicts that by 2050 there could be 8.9 billion people on the planet.

Prof Ian Roberts, continued, "Everyone accepts that population growth threatens global environmental sustainability -- our study shows that population fatness is also a major threat. Unless we tackle both population and fatness -- our chances are slim."
