South Africa: 19 killed in head-on crash (AP)

JOHANNESBURG ? South African police say 19 people were killed when an overtaking car smashed head-on into a minibus taxi as the nation's holiday accident toll continues to grow.

Sergeant Mmako Mophiring said both vehicles caught fire after they collided Monday on a road in central Free State.

Some victims were burned beyond recognition.

The police spokesman said Tuesday that it appeared the car was trying to overtake another vehicle when it smashed into the oncoming taxi. All four people in the car and 15 in the taxi died at the scene. Nine injured have been hospitalized.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation said reckless overtaking was one of the main causes for more than 800 deaths that have occurred on South African roads since Dec. 1.

Latest ? President Obama

Subject: Pool report #2

The first family exited the chapel and the motorcade was rolling at 12:15. Arrived back in their neighborhood at 12:21.

Pool is now holding at a nearby house to partake in a special Christmas lunch of ? pizza. Pool hold also has a tiny Charlie Brown-style tree, being trimmed with more than just a single red ornament.

Spotted some onlookers on the base and along the road, plus a long line of traffic at the base entrance. Spotted a blue sign on the way onto Kailuana Place that read ?E komo mai ohana Obama,? welcoming the Obama family to town.

More details on the family:
FLOTUS?s dress was white with an orange band around the waist and one stripe each in orange, pink and yellow around the full skirt. She was wearing orange flats.
Walking to her right to her was Sasha in a dark dress with a colorful dot patter and holding a greenish-yellow sweater.
The president walked to Sasha?s right in his blue shirt and khakis. Malia was to his right in a white dress with white dots throughout. All three Obama women wore their hair in buns.

California soldier shot at his homecoming party

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. (AP) ? An Army soldier recovering from injuries suffered in a suicide bombing in Afghanistan has been shot at his homecoming party, and family members say he?s paralyzed and in critical condition.

Spec. Christopher Sullivan, 22, was shot late Friday while trying to break up a fight between his brother and another man at a San Bernardino residence.

?My son didn?t deserve this. He served his country,? his mother, Suzanne Sullivan, told the San Bernardino Sun.

Ms. Sullivan said her son suffered two gunshot wounds to his back, which shattered his spine. Family members told the newspaper that the shooting late Friday left Spec. Sullivan paralyzed and in critical condition.

Police said Spec. Sullivan?s brother and a partygoer got into an argument. When Spec. Sullivan moved to intervene, the man pulled a gun and opened fire.

The gunman fled the scene before police arrived.

Spec. Sullivan was wounded in a suicide bombing attack last year in Kandahar while serving with the 101st Infantry Division.

He suffered a cracked collar bone and brain damage in the attack and has been recovering in Kentucky, where he is stationed.

He was home on leave when the shooting occurred.

His enlistment would be complete in April, after which Spec. Sullivan had planned to come home to go to college.

Family members are calling on the shooter to surrender.

Police have not identified the suspect.

U.S. Military Family Gets $20,000 Christmas Surprise

A deserving military family walked into a Home Depot last week and left with a $20,000 gift certificate for home repairs.

The store employees, in their signature orange aprons, crowded around the entrance of their Salt Lake City location -- waiting to give the Dilley family, the best Christmas they've had in a long time.

This year the chain launched its first, 'Gift of Good' campaign, a national web-driven campaign to find the most deserving military family to be awarded with the home repair certificate

"This program was inspired by the spirit of giving during the holidays and we thought the most meaningful gift to give is simply helping out a neighbor in need," said Home Depot spokeswoman Nicole Carriere.

A group of "do-it-yourself" and military bloggers took to the web to find a deserving family, Carriere explained. The web-experts narrowed down the military families, relying on a network of diaries, personal accounts and social media.

The group was made up of bloggers "who we've worked with previously, or who we thought would be interested based on the topics they covered," Carriere said. "Many of them hadn't met in person or didn't follow each other before the program and it was great for us to watch them build friendships with each other and form their own mini-community around the program."

The web-experts took months to narrow down the military families, all deserving. They even interviewed local media, peeked into personal networks and looked to other bloggers. The bloggers, one of them an Atlanta resident, told Carriere the decision was incredibly tough but they settled on SSgt. Kevin Dilley, his wife Tyrena and their five kids. Dilley has been overseas three times to Iraq and Afghanistan and right now he's deployed to Greenland near the Arctic Circle.

While he is a world away Tyrena is at home with their kids. Two of their children have spina bifida, a developmental disorder when some vertebrae overlying the spinal cord are not fully formed and remain open. Both kids are in wheel chairs and have undergone multiple surgeries.

"They are very positive, upbeat and humble people ? the last people who would ever ask for anyone to do anything for them," Carriere said.

The family lives in an older home in need of a lot of renovation. Volunteers and home repair contractors checked out the home to assess their needs but the initial wish list includes essentials such as roof repair, a new HVAC system, flooring and insulation and handicap improvements such as ramps.

"The community is really rallying around this family to do as much as they can to help ? we're extremely excited to kick off the project," Carriere said.
