For some in need, Facebook is route to new kidney (AP)

SEATTLE ? Here's another reason for holdouts to join the social media site Facebook: It's a great place to find a kidney.

Between the kid photos and reminiscences about high school, more and more pleas for help from people with failing kidneys are popping up. Facebook and other social media sites are quickly becoming a go-to place to find a generous person with a kidney to spare, according to the people asking for help and some national organizations that facilitate matches.

Damon Brown found a kidney on Facebook after telling his story on a special page the Seattle dad created under the name, "Damon Kidney." His friends and family forwarded the link to everyone they knew and on Jan. 3 a woman his wife has known for years, but not someone they consider a close family friend, will be giving him a kidney.

"She said it wasn't really for me. It was for my kids, because they deserve to have a dad around," said Brown, 38.

Brown's story is not unique, said April Paschke, a spokeswoman for the United Network for Organ Sharing, a private nonprofit organization that manages the nation's organ transplant system for the federal government.

"We see more and more people matched up by social media," she said. "It's an extension of the way we communicate. Before we found the Internet, people found other ways: through a church bulletin, word of mouth or an advertisement even."

This past year, a man in Michigan also found a kidney donor through Facebook, and a Florida woman found one through Craigslist.

Damon Brown admits he was a little embarrassed to ask for help so publicly. Except for telling close friends and family, the Seattle father of two young boys had been keeping his illness pretty quiet.

He was on the official transplant list and had started mobile dialysis through Northwest Kidney Centers but Brown was seeing his health deteriorate ? he was constantly tired and achy. He couldn't sit on the bed to tell bedtime stories to 5-year-old Julian and 3-year-old Theo because he had to stay close to his dialysis machine.

"I'm a strong guy, but I would have to say, it's been rough this year," he said. Brown had put himself on the long wait list for a kidney from a deceased donor, knowing he would have to wait at least three years before he was called.

After one particularly difficult visit with his doctor, Damon and his wife, Bethany, decided to create the Facebook page, which has attracted more than 1,400 friends.

A few weeks ago, after the transplant was approved and scheduled, Brown posted the good news to his Facebook friends. More than 300 people responded: "Whoo hoo....what a great Christmas present," wrote Kelly L. Hallissey. "This is awesome!! Praying for you and your family for positive news and a great way to begin 2012!" wrote Brenda Tomtan.

Many people are not aware that kidney and liver donations can now come from living donors.

In 2010, 16,800 kidney transplants were performed in the United States, of which 6,277 came from living donors, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing. An average of 46 kidney transplants take place each day in this country, while another 13 people who have been waiting for a kidney die each day. About 90,000 are on the transplant list right now.

Jacqueline Ryall, 45, said she felt a need to donate a kidney to Brown to give back her own good health and all she has been given. She's not a mom and gushed about how beautiful Damon and Bethany's kids are.

"The real reason I'm doing this is he's got kids and he's a good guy," she said. "My life is in a good place. I've been given lots and I have a responsibility to give back."

Ryall said her elderly mother does not understand why she would give a kidney to someone other than her own brother and sister, and her family is worried about her health going forward.

After her own research, however, Ryall decided it's relatively safe for a woman in good health to donate a kidney. If something is going to go wrong with her own kidneys, she has heard they usually fail in twos.

"Right now it feels like absolutely the right thing to do," she said, adding that she hopes her decision will help make other people less afraid to do the same thing.

News media coverage of his quest flooded his hospital with so many requests for information ? from total strangers ? that Brown said he was asked to pull back on his publicity efforts. Four people passed the initial screening and came in for tests. Now that he sees a happy ending coming for himself, Brown would like to do whatever he can to help others.

April Capone, the previous mayor of East Haven, Conn., knows what Brown means about the attraction of happy endings.

Two years ago, she was sitting in her office checking her Facebook feed, when a post from one of her constituents popped up saying he needed a kidney.

"At that moment, Carlos was at Mayo, testing to get on the transplant list," said Capone, 36. "He really didn't tell anyone he was sick. The doctor said, `if you don't do it, no one is going to know'." So Carlos Sanchez pulled out his cell phone and posted the request and Capone responded immediately.

"I knew from the second I saw his post that I was going to be a donor," said Capone, who barely knew Sanchez at the time. Now they're as close as siblings, talk on the phone almost daily and meet for lunch regularly.

Capone said she had no personal reason for donating a kidney; she just want to save a life.

"It was the best thing I ever did with my life," she said. "I wish I had more; I would do it again."

Pope's Mexico itinerary leaves out capital

(AP)? MEXICO CITY ? Pope Benedict XVI will head to the Catholic-rich state of Guanajuato in his first visit to Mexico in March, and skip the country's heavily populated capital.

The Mexican Episcopal Conference says Benedict will arrive on March 23 in the city of Leon where President Felipe Calderon will welcome him.

The organization said in a Sunday statement that Benedict also plans to greet worshippers in the city of Guanajuato.

He will officiate a Mass in the city of Silao beneath a hill where a 67-foot statue of Jesus Christ stands.

The pope will return to Leon to address bishops from Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean before heading to Cuba on March 26.

The Vatican had said Benedict would avoid Mexico City because of its high altitude although it's the country's biggest city.

a new opinion in Computer about Microsoft ARC Mouse Special Edition

Microsoft ARC Mouse Special Edition

Product Type: Microsoft mice & trackballs

Newest Review:?... To change settings on it however you need to download a small free programme called Microsoft mouse. (Easy to do) From then on it is ex... more

After purchasing my laptop and realising that I actually need a wireless and more portable mouse I asked my friends what they thought I should get. So after a little bit of physical research and a look at some online reviews is settled to buying this mouse off the internet.

-First glance-
After opening the box I was immediately impressed with my purchase as the mouse looked as good as I had expected, and much, much better. The whole design is very sleek and stylish and is surprisingly comfortable. As I had hoped the receiver that plugged into the USB port was very small (however not the smallest available) so that it would not get knocked too easily.

-Comfort-
After using the mouse for around a year now I can safely say that it is very comfortable and has never given me any kind of wrist or hand strain. The buttons are easy to reach, and the scroll wheel is nicely placed for easy reach by either the first or middle finger. The side button that is programmable to what you want is out of reach for accidental pressing, however with a slight stretch of the thumb it is comfortable to use and marvellous once you get used to having a mouse with a fourth button. The mouse is even textured so that you can grip it better which gives a great quality feel to the product.

-Portability-
One of the main features of this mouse is the fact that it folds up easily to half of its original size. This has proved very useful for moving with my laptop and it quick and simple. The mouse turns off and on when you close and open the mouse respectively.
Another great feature of this product is that the USB receiver can be stored magnetically to the underside of the mouse when not in use. This is extremely useful for moving the mouse as it will never get lost. The magnetic catch is surprisingly strong which means it will not fall off accidentally.
The whole mouse fits in a small bag/pouch that comes with the product. This is great for stopping anything scratching the mouse when in transit, and is very stylish in itself with a magnetic catch of its own. Overall it is the most portable full sized mice that I have ever seen. It's range is even up to nine meters which can be useful in some situations, believe me.

-Software-
The mouse easily installs itself into the computer automatically. To change settings on it however you need to download a small free programme called Microsoft mouse. (Easy to do) From then on it is extremely simple to change mouse button settings, DPI, and all sorts of settings that you might need to set the mouse up to your personal preferences. This is a great addition, especially as it is free and oh so simple.

-Quality-
During the time I have had my mouse I have never had any problems with it. The whole product has been made extremely well. I half expected the hinge to break, however it is metal and I haven't had any problems to report as of yet. The feel of the mouse is very solid, and not too plastic and cheap.

-Aesthetics-
Personally I think this mouse is very stylish and as it comes in black, red and now white it can suit just about any computer or laptop that it is used with.

-Overall-
This is the best mouse that I have owned to date, and for the price it is definitely very competitive with many transportable mice. It is great to have a full sized mouse that is portable. The batteries last for a long time, and there is even a small light to tell you the status of the battery so it will not just drop dead on you. I would recommend this mouse to anyone wanting a mouse that will move around.

Summary: The best transportable mouse I have come across

Iran navy tests surface-to-air missile in drill

(AP Photo/IIPA, Ali Mohammadi)

(AP) ? Iran's navy said Sunday it test-fired an advanced surface-to-air missile during a drill in international waters near the strategic Strait of Hormuz, the passageway for one-sixth of the world's oil supply.

Iran's state TV said the missile, named Mehrab, or Altar, is designed to evade radar and was developed by Iranian scientists. The report said the missile was tested Sunday but provided no further details.

A leading Iranian lawmaker said the sea maneuvers serve as practice for closing the Strait of Hormuz if the West blocks Iran's oil sales. After top Iranian officials made the same threat a week ago, military commanders emphasized that Iran has no intention of blocking the waterway now.

The exercise covers a 1,250-mile (2,000-kilometer) stretch of water beyond the Strait of Hormuz, including parts of the Indian Ocean and the Gulf of Aden.

The drill, which could bring Iranian ships into proximity with U.S. Navy vessels that operate in the same area, is Iran's latest show of strength in the face of mounting international criticism over its nuclear program. The West fears Iran's program aims to develop atomic weapons ? a charge Tehran denies, insisting it's for peaceful purposes only.

The 10-day exercise drew significant attention after the Iranian warnings about closing the strait. Iranian military officials later appeared to back away from that threat.

A spokesman for the exercise, Rear Adm. Mahmoud Mousavi, made a similar conciliatory comment on Sunday.

"We won't disrupt traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. We are not after this," the semiofficial ISNA news agency quoted him as saying.

Prominent lawmaker Ismail Kowsari offered a different view. He said the war games are part of Iran's preparations to close the vital waterway if sanctions are imposed.

"Iran's armed forces have practiced operations to close the Strait of Hormuz several times," the semiofficial Fars news agency quoted Kowsari as saying Sunday.

"If we feel that the enemies want to prevent our oil exports, definitely we will close the Strait of Hormuz," he said.

Mousavi said the missile that was tested Sunday is one of the newest in the navy's arsenal.

"It's equipped with state-of-the-art technology and a built-in system that enables it to thwart jammers," Mousavi told state TV. One way to deflect surface-to-air missiles is to confuse their guidance systems.

1st US museum dedicated to Greek culture opens (AP)

CHICAGO ? Dolls a Greek woman made during World War II. Ice cream bowls and wooden spoons from a 1940s Greek candy store. Thousands of record albums filled with Greek music.

These items and many other beloved objects and family heirlooms have found their way from around the country to the National Hellenic Museum in Chicago, which has a new place to store and exhibit them all, in a four-story 40,000-square-foot environmentally friendly building of limestone and glass that opened in early December.

The $20 million project in the city's Greektown neighborhood, which includes temporary and permanent exhibition space, classrooms, oral history archives, a library and roof patio overlooking downtown, replaces the museum's previous space a few blocks away on one floor of a four-story building.

"This museum became by default the repository for artifacts from the Greek American experience because there was no other place people felt secure donating their items," said Stephanie Vlahakis, the museum's executive director.

Outside the museum, the street bustles with diners at Greek restaurants like The Parthenon, Athena or Santorini. A group of men speak Greek during an animated game of backgammon at the Panhellenic Pastry Shop with mounds of powdered sugar almond cookies and baklava piled in the glass cases behind the counter.

"We are telling the story of Greek America," Vlahakis said. "We just start from the beginning, from ancient times and bring it to the modern times."

The museum is a work in progress, with a skeleton version of the permanent exhibit on the second floor. Curators have scribbled design concepts in colored marker on the walls, like "absolutely want mosaic work" or "look into etching on glass?" The hope is to raise enough money to fill the displays out in a year.

But there is still plenty to see: shelves filled with items from a Greek family in New York, a wall of black and white pictures that chronicles the story of Greek immigrants in America and an area to learn the Greek alphabet. Visitors can watch a short introductory video narrated by, who else, George Stephanopoulos.

Museum curator Bethany Fleming hopes to travel to Greece and make casts of columns, gates and parts of temples to bring back to Chicago.

Downstairs the temporary exhibit space is home to "Gods, Myths and Mortals: Discover Ancient Greece," an exhibit on loan from the Children's Museum of Manhattan until August. It's a child's view of the daily life of ancient Greece and its legends and heroes, like Aristotle, Odysseus and Cyclops.

"What we want to do with all our exhibits is create a place where all generations of visitors can connect," Fleming said.

There's a kid-sized recreated Greek temple, and children can dress up in togas in front of a mirror or crawl into a jungle-gym Trojan horse. Interspersed are nearly three dozen Greek artifacts, including coins, pottery and figurines. One Macedonian drachma coin dates to 336-323 B.C. and is about the size of a dime.

The museum building itself is inspired by nature, containing elements of earth, air, fire and water. Inside a large, sky-lit stairway leads visitors from east to west, symbolizing the travel of Greek immigrants from Europe to America. Everything, Vlahakis says, was done deliberately to parallel the Greek American experience.

"So much of our world is inspired by the ancient," she said.

The two injured miners were taken to a local hospital had minor smoke inhalation, New Market Fire Department Captain Sammy Solomon said

There were 54 miners underground when the fire started on a drill rig about 800 feet below the ground, officials said.

The three men were able to make it to a safe room about a mile underground. About an hour after the fire ignited around 1:10 p.m. EST, they were able to make contact with people on the surface of the mine, officials said.

It was not clear yet how the fire started at the Young Mine about 25 miles northeast of Knoxville. The mine is operated by the Switzerland based company Nyrstar.

A spokeswoman for Nyrstar said the miners were in "fine spirits" after they were rescued.

Prostate Cancer Diagnosis

Every year, thousands of men receive the diagnosis of prostate cancer. Because of the high number of men afflicted with this disease, annual screening tests have been put into place to hopefully catch prostate cancer in its early stages. A number of tests also exist to confirm the presence of prostate cancer after an abnormality is found through screening.

  1. Regular Screening

All men over the age of 50 should be screened annually for prostate cancer. African-American men and men with a strong family history of prostate cancer have been shown to have higher rates of prostate cancer and need to start their screening at age 40 (or even earlier if family members have developed prostate cancer at younger ages).

Additionally, any men who have symptoms suggestive of prostate cancer need to undergo testing.

Appropriate screening involves both a yearly digital rectal exam and prostate specific antigen blood test.

    • Digital Rectal Exam (DRE)

During this exam, the physician inserts a lubricated, gloved finger (digit) into the rectum. Because of the prostate?s location just in front of the rectum, the physician is able to feel the edge of the prostate where the majority of cancers begin. Abnormalities such as bumps or hardness of the prostate can be detected in this way.

This test is usually completed in 5 to 10 seconds and most men have little discomfort during it.

    • Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) Blood Test

A small sample of blood is taken and then sent to a lab for analysis. PSA is a protein that is only produced by prostate cells. As the prostate enlarges, whether due to cancer or another cause, the amount of PSA produced increases.

High levels of PSA or rapid increases in the PSA level can alert the physician to a possible underlying cancer.

  2. Prostatic Biopsy

If an abnormality is found on the DRE or the PSA test, the physician will typically order a biopsy of the prostate.

A biopsy involves taking a very small sample of tissue from the prostate. This is done using a thin needle that is placed into the prostate. A tiny amount of tissue is trapped in the needle while it is in the prostate and then the needle is pulled out. This is repeated in a number of locations throughout the prostate so as to minimize the chance of missing an area where cancer may is present.

This procedure is usually done by an urologist or other surgeon in their office and involves using local anesthesia to minimize pain.

The tissue samples are then sent to a pathologist (a specialized physician who diagnoses diseases based on their appearance under a microscope) who makes the final diagnosis of prostate cancer.

At this time, the pathologist can also look at the cancer cells to determine how abnormal they are. This is called the cancer?s ?grade?. A high grade means that the cells are very abnormal and that the cancer is more likely to spread.

An excellent video is available that illustrates how a prostate biopsy works.

  3. Tests to Determine the Extent of the Cancer

Testing does not stop after the pathologist has determined whether or not cancer is present. In order to treat the cancer effectively, the physicians caring for you must know how far the cancer has spread.

To determine this, a number of tests can be used. Your physician will determine which of these are the best choices for your particular situation, but all work to detect cancer that has spread outside of the prostate.

    • Ultrasound ? A thin ultrasound probe is inserted into the rectum. The ultrasound can show if nearby organs and tissues have been invaded by cancer.
    • Bone Scan ? Prostate cancer often spreads to bones if not detected early. For this reason, this test can be done to provide a detailed picture of the body?s bones. Areas of cancer in the bones can then be detected by your physician.
    • CT Scan or MRI ? These two tests can be used to provide a detailed look at the organs and tissues in the abdomen and pelvis. Only large, bulky areas of cancer outside of the prostate can be seen with these, so they need to be combined with other tests to be most useful.
    • Lymph Node Biopsy ? Lymph nodes are small structures located all over the body. Cancers often spread to nearby lymph nodes earlier than to other tissues. By surgically removing some of the lymph nodes near the prostate and having them analyzed for the presence of cancer, your physician can confirm that the cancer has not spread outside of the prostate.

All of these tests help to determine how far the cancer has spread or the ?stage? of your cancer. Staging helps your physician determine the best treatment option for you.
