Tony Bennett Pushes for Legalization of Drugs

In the wake of Whitney Houston's death, most celebrities are reacting with nothing but condolences and kind words about the iconic singer.

Some, however, are speaking out in more detail, with Celine Dion telling Good Morning America today that the celebrity culture itself bears some responsibility for Whitney's demise.

Tony Bennett, meanwhile, has taken a different, surprising tact. At Clive Davis' annual Grammy Awards party, held just hours after Houston passed away, the legendary artist went off on a different topic.

Tony Bennett at the Grammys

"First it was Michael Jackson, then Amy Winehouse, now, the magnificent Whitney Houston," he said. "I'd like every person in this room to campaign to legalize drugs. Let's legalize drugs like they did in Amsterdam. No one's hiding or sneaking around corners to get it. They go to a doctor to get it."

Not sure if that would have saved any of the aforementioned lives, but it's always an interesting debate. Where do you stand?

Should America legalize drugs?

Actor Wahlberg apologizes for 9/11 comments

[unable to retrieve full-text content]NEW YORK (AP) ? Actor Mark Wahlberg has apologized for asserting that he would have stopped terrorists from flying an airliner into New York's World Trade Center on Sept. 11 if he had been on the plane.

Rocky Kistner: Guardians of the Ogallala

The battle over?the?proposed 1,700 mile Keystone XL pipeline has raged across the political corridors of the nation?s capitol. But in the pristine prairies of the Great Plains states, ranchers on the frontlines have been equally engaged in the fight.? At stake is the country?s most important groundwater resource?the ?Ogallala Aquifer?which provides drinking water to residents in eight states and is the sustaining force for much of America?s breadbasket.

A fierce guardian of the aquifer is Bruce Boettcher, a proud resident of the Sand Hills region who provides 80,000 pounds of organic beef to market each year. Boettcher and other Nebraskans say the proposed tar sands pipeline is way too dangerous a risk to the Ogallala, an aquifer that bubbles to the surface in places and could be devastated by a pipeline spill of corrosive tar sands oil.

?

NRDC Journey OnEarth producer Roshini Thinakaran and cameraman/editor Zak Wenning traveled to get a first-hand look at this national treasure and to learn why ranchers and residents in the Cornhusker State are holding firm against a Canadian oil pipeline that could threaten their land and livelihoods. ?

Idris Elba Talks Thor 2, The Avengers, and Those Bond Rumors

idris elba thor sequel avengers james bond

Immediately following his win at the 2012 Golden Globes ceremony, ubiquitous fan-favorite Idris Elba was hit up by journalists wanting to know more about his upcoming film schedule, which could possibly include both Marvel?s Thor 2 and The Avengers, as well as the James Bond franchise somewhere down the road (if rumor mongering is anything to go by).

Elba is currently back in Toronto, where he?s working on filmmaker Guillermo del Toro?s anticipated sci-fi/giant monster movie, Pacific Rim. However, before he departed the Globes event, the English actor dropped a few tidbits about which upcoming movies he will for certain show up in ? as well as which ones remain possibilities.

MTV asked Elba about whether or not he?ll be reprising his well-liked turn as the Guardian of Worlds, Heimdall, in either (or both) this summer?s The Avengers and the upcoming Thor sequel. Elba revealed that he has not yet met with newly-minted Thor 2 helmer Alan Taylor, but that he?s a lock to return for that comic book flick; Avengers, on the other hand, is a project he?s ?unsure? about right now.

That leaves Elba in the same boat as his Thor co-star, Jaimie Alexander, who also refused to rule out the appearance of her onscreen Asgardian counterpart, the warrior gal Sif, in writer/director Joss Whedon?s superhero teamup flick. Obviously, at this point, their theoretical parts in the film would amount to nothing more than a glorified cameo, but there remains the chance that both characters (as well as Asgard itself) could appear briefly during The Avengers ? or, rather, in an after-credits scene, in keeping with Marvel Studio?s tradition.

In addition to his aforementioned comments, Elba also spoke briefly with journalists at the Golden Globes about his possibly becoming Daniel Craig?s successor to the 007 throne. Here?s what he had to say:

?There was a huge rumor that once?Daniel?Craig finishes playing Bond that they were looking for someone different and my name was in that mix. And I answered a bunch of questions and the bottom line is of course, I?d be honoured to play the part if it comes my way.?

Elba previously made it clear that he?s simply interested in portraying a new cinematic incarnation of James Bond, rather than playing ?a black version? of the iconic secret agent. Craig is reportedly being considered to portray 007 for five more films, following the release of Skyfall later this year, but that deal is far from set in stone; not to mention, there?s been no word as to whether or not Craig actually wants?to continue wearing the Bond suit for that long.

In other words: don?t count out Elba or any other rumored candidates (like Henry Cavill and Michael Fassbender) as contenders to eventually take on the title of Mr. Bond just?yet.

The Avengers will be released in 2D and 3D theaters in the U.S. on May 4th, 2012.

Thor 2 is slated for a U.S. theatrical release on November 15th, 2013.

Deborah Gaines: College Choice: Why Are We So Obsessed With Our Kids' Decisions?

A woman I know -- let's call her Joan -- recently took a leave of absence from work in order to focus on her son's college search. "His choice of school will determine the outcome for at least the first part of his adult life," she explains. "I want him to give him every chance to succeed."

Joan isn't talking about Stanford vs. Princeton. Her son is a B student, on a good day, and would rather play video games than go out for varsity sports. At 16, "he hasn't shown much interest in college yet," Joan admits. But she's convinced this will change when he finds the right "fit."

Another parent of a 16-year-old, New York nonprofit executive Barbara Heisler, is also concerned with fit. "I care less about which school my daughter picks than that it offers (her) opportunities to figure out where she wants to make her mark, and support to help her get there."

Heisler adds, "Name schools don't impress me. Having worked in higher education for 15 years, I know that a bad fit at any level can disillusion an otherwise passionate learner."

For a humanities professor doing the college search with her daughter, it's all about options. "If my kid decides at age 18 that she wants to throw pots and sell them at craft fairs, I'd support that," she says. "But let her throw pots at Williams, so that if at age 32 she decides she wants to be a civil engineer, she will have the degree and network to succeed without being penalized for choices she made as a teenager."

Still others worry about return on investment. As one dad puts it, "I'm not going to pay $60,000 a year for a school no one's heard of." These parents want a name that will open doors when employers see it on a resume.

With one child immersed in the college search and a second on deck, I've shared many of these concerns. Furthermore, I believe that my own college choice -- made much more casually -- influenced my life in important and long-lasting ways.

Still, I can't help thinking that Joan is over the top. And I'm wondering if I'm right there with her.

Full disclosure: If there was a master's degree in Naviance, I would qualify. I have spent hours comparing "scattergrams" and compiling lists of potential schools for my daughter to visit. I am a power user on College Confidential, although I mostly lurk. I've read Princeton Review's Best 373 Colleges cover to cover.

I spent far less time learning about the school district where my children have spent the past twelve years. When we moved, I remember thinking, "If there's a problem, we can always pull them out."

Other potentially high-impact choices that didn't involve years of research included buying a house, choosing a pediatrician, and deciding on a religious community. Some of these worked out better than others. When mistakes were made, we changed direction as soon as we could.

So why does part of me believe that this one decision -- where my kids attend college -- will make or break their future lives?

Peter Dinklage Shouts Out Dwarf-Tossing Victim In Golden Globes Speech

Aspiring actor Martin Henderson was partially paralyzed after drunk stranger picked him up and threw him in U.K.

Peter Dinklage might have started off his Golden Globes acceptance speech Sunday night (January 15) with a charming anecdote about his mother telling him Guy Pearce was going to beat him for the best supporting TV actor award, but he ended it on a serious note. The "Game of Thrones" star gave a shout-out to fellow dwarf Martin Henderson but, rather then elaborating, he just said "Google him."

Within minutes, Henderson's name was a trending topic on Twitter. The aspiring actor was partially paralyzed on his birthday after a drunk stranger picked him up and threw him while he was having a cigarette outside a pub in the U.K. Henderson blames the English rugby team players who recently attended a dwarf-tossing contest during the rugby World Cup in New Zealand for inspiring the attack.

The Daily Mail reports that he now faces life in a wheelchair after the incident. Henderson was recovering from a 2010 back injury but has said that this injury has set him back in his recuperation. He went on to tell The Daily Mail that he believes this will affect his acting career.

"Every time I stand up I don't know if I'm going to fall over. I will have to use a wheelchair and I won't get any acting jobs," said Henderson, who has appeared in U.K. TV series "10th Kingdom" and "Bigger Breakfast."

British authorities are currently looking for the man who assaulted Henderson. The incident occurred on October 7, but Henderson's condition has reportedly worsened as the months have passed. He said that his legs became numb following the attack and that he now keeps falling over, even resulting in a recent fractured arm.

"I guess I was an easy target and the only reason I was picked on was because I am small," Henderson said in the interview. "People's attitudes to me when I go out can be pretty cruel. Most are OK but you get the odd idiot who will make fun and start laughing at me. You just have to ignore it, but this is the first time I have been picked up and thrown about."

Both Dinklage and Henderson suffer from achondroplasia, which causes dwarfirsm. Dinklage was likely trying to raise awareness for a cause that's close to his heart with the shout-out.
