Poonyakorn18d Blog Internet Phone Service For Home Offices and ...

We are witnessing several marvels in today's electronic world - particularly in the field of communications. High-speed broadband services and technological advancements in voice and data compression are making conversations possible without a telephone network while reducing communications costs. It is a fact that large organizations have increasingly started using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) for their phone needs. Individuals, home offices and small businesses are using a combination of landlines and cell phones for business communications. For home offices and small offices, there are today quite a few options when it comes to setting up business communications facilities.Landline replacement services are offered by several local broadband providers. They either replace or bypass the exterior connection from the phone company. You continue to use the existing phones, and there is also no change in phone number. As a matter of fact, you are not even required to be a broadband subscriber. All that is needed is you should be within the broadband service area of your service provider.VoIP services are indeed attractive as compared with traditional landline service as you can enjoy unlimited calling facility for a fixed monthly fee - apart from enjoying several features like voice mail, call waiting, caller ID etc. One serious limitation is broadband phone service will fail during a power outage unless you as well as your broadband provider have a working battery backup.Vonage V-Phone offers direct landline replacement and there is no need for a computer. The device is called a V-Phone, which is a flash drive with a headset jack and plugs into a Windows XP computer. The V-Phone has limitations as it only works with wired headsets and with PCs and does not fully support Windows Vista.MagicJack is a competitor to V-Phone. Like the V-Phone, Magic Jack plugs into the computer's USB port but has a phone jack at the other end so a regular telephone can be used. Service plans include an incoming phone number, and unrestricted outgoing calls to the U.S., Canada and other MagicJack users. Many standard features such as caller ID, call waiting and call forwarding are included. MagicJack has the same drawbacks as V-Phone as it requires the computer switched on. MagicJack runs on Windows XP, Vista and Macs.T-Mobile, a mobile phone service, offers two VoIP services to subscribers. T-Mobile @Home is a landline replacement service. It also requires an existing broadband Internet connection, and a special router purchased through T-Mobile. The @Home service has features like call waiting, caller ID, call forwarding, three-way calling and voice mail.T-Mobile also offers subscribers a HotSpot service for cell phones. This service allows your cell phone to place and receive calls over a Wi-Fi connection. Calls made or received through a Wi-Fi connection are free and are not subject to deduction from your monthly allotment of minutes.Skype is universally popular. Skype enables making and receiving calls using the computer. Skype can work with a dial-up Internet connection instead of broadband. Skype requires a computer for setup and usage, although special handsets allow Skype calling over most Wi-Fi connections. You can install Skype on your computer, plug in a headset with microphone, and talk with other Skype users anywhere in the world while connected to the Internet. If you have a webcam, you can also indulge in a videochat. The Internet Phone Service that is best suited for you depends on your specific requirements. If you want total reliability for calls and consider 911 important, traditional landlines are still best. If you want simplicity with savings, then look at landline replacement services. If you are a frequent traveler or make many international calls, consider Skype, MagicJack and Vonage V-Phone.

Stress Management Improves Breast Cancer Outcomes | Psych ...

By Rick Nauert PhD Senior News Editor
Reviewed by John M. Grohol, Psy.D. on March 22, 2012

Stress Management Improves Breast Cancer OutcomesNew research suggests a stress management program can help to offset the trauma of receiving a diagnosis of breast cancer and reduce anxiety accompanying chemotherapy and/or radiation.

Researchers also believe the stress management intervention promotes healing by reducing stress on the immune system thereby altering the tumor process at the molecular level.

The study, led by Michael H. Antoni, Ph.D., is one of the first to link psychological intervention with genetic expression in cancer patients.

Researchers used a group-based 10-week Cognitive-Behavioral Stress Management (CBSM) intervention. The program combines relaxation, imagery and deep breathing, along with cognitive-behavioral therapy. The goal of the intervention is to help patients reduce bodily tension, change the way they deal with intrusive stressful thoughts, decrease negative moods, and improve their interpersonal communication skills.

In the study, 79 women undergoing primary treatment for stage 0-III breast cancer were randomized into a 10-week CBSM program or a psychoeducational control group in the weeks following surgery. Six-month and 12-month follow up assessments were conducted.

?For the women in the CBSM groups, there was better psychological adaptation to the whole process of going through treatment for breast cancer and there were physiological changes that indicated that the women were recovering better,? Antoni said.

?The results suggest that the stress management intervention mitigates the influence of the stress of cancer treatment and promotes recovery over the first year.?

The study has been published in the journal Biological Psychiatry.

Previous research has shown that during times of adversity, our nervous and endocrine systems send signals to the immune system, which defends us from disease. In response, our body activates specific genes inside immune cells called white blood cells or leukocytes, Antoni said.

?For the women that participated in the intervention groups, the genes that signal the production of molecules associated with a healthy immune response, such as type I interferon, were up-regulated?meaning they were producing more of these substances, compared to levels seen in the control group,? Antoni said.

?At the same time, the genes responsible for the production of substances involved in cancer progression, such as pro-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines and matrix metalloproteinases were down-regulated.?

Researchers believe that providing support and tools to manage stress is critical during the time in which a women has been diagnosed with breast cancer, followed by surgery, then chemotherapy or radiation.

?This can be an emotionally and physically exhausting period offering little opportunity for recovery. If stress affects the immune system in a negative way, then their recovery could be slowed down and those patients taking longer to recover may be at risk for poorer health outcomes.

?Conversely, if stress management intervention can reduce the impact of stress on the immune system then recovery may be hastened.?

The research team plans to follow the women in this cohort to see if CBSM intervention and its effects on leukocyte gene expression are predictive of reoccurrence and/or long-term health outcomes.

Wedding Bells Still Chime

If you believe marriage is in decline, think again. A new government report has found that 8 in 10 women will get married by the time they turn 40, a figure that is virtually unchanged from the 1990s, before the drop in middle-income jobs reduced the supply of marriageable men.

The report was based on findings from the National Survey of Family Growth, a survey of more than 22,000 men and women conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention between 2006 and 2010. It provides one of the best estimates for marriage and divorce in the United States, and drew considerable attention among researchers and news organizations when it was released publicly on Thursday.

But while many chose to highlight the most immediate finding, that 4 in 10 women between the ages of 15 and 44 are currently married, demographers who sifted through the numbers said the longer-term trend ? that most women eventually still do marry ? was more surprising, as it challenged the now commonly held perception that marriage is disappearing.

?The idea that marriage is on the decline and fading away, that picture is misleading,? said Andrew Cherlin, a demographer at Johns Hopkins University.

Lifetime marriage is far lower today than it was during the peak years in the 1950s, when more than nine-tenths of the adult population married at some point in their lives. But the new report suggests that the decline may have stopped in recent decades, Mr. Cherlin said, as lifetime marriage rates have changed little since the 1990s.

The figure of 4 in 10 women currently married may seem stark, demographers say, but it is simply a reflection of the fact that women are marrying later in the age spectrum. (The survey questioned men and women ages 15 to 44.) In 1982, the share of women currently married was 52 percent, and in 1995 it was 49 percent.

The story, Mr. Cherlin said, is more about postponement than abandonment. Marriage has declined precipitously among young women, both college graduates and women with less education. But most women do eventually marry. According to the report, 82 percent of women who ended their formal education after graduating from high school will marry by the age of 40. Among women with a college degree the figure is 89 percent.

Marriage has remained mostly intact, but childbearing in wedlock has not, a change that has opened a deep class divide. College-educated women tend to wait to marry before having their children. Less educated women do not, a choice that has driven a major change in American family structure. More than half of all births to women under 30 take place outside of marriage, according to Child Trends, a research group in Washington.

Just 8 percent of births to women over 18 with a college degree happen outside wedlock, compared to 57 percent of births to women with high school diplomas or less, according to Child Trends, which cited 2009 data.

A new, giant wasp comes from Indonesia

A new and unusual wasp species has been discovered during an expedition to the Indonesian island of Sulawesi.

It was independently also found in the insect collections of the Museum fr Naturkunde in Berlin, where it was awaiting discovery since the 1930s, when it had been collected on Sulawesi. The new species is pitch-black, has an enormous body size, and its males have long, sickle-shaped jaws. The findings have now been described in the open access journal ZooKeys.

The species belongs into the digger wasp family, which is a diverse group of wasps with several thousands of species known from all over the world. Female digger wasps search for other insects as prey for their young and paralyze the prey by stinging it. Prey selection is often species specific, but the prey of the new species is unknown. With its unusual body size and the male's jaws, the new species differs from all known related digger wasps, so much so that it was placed in a new genus of its own, Megalara.

The new genus name is a combination of the Greek Mega, meaning large, and the ending of Dalara, a related wasp genus.

Lynn Kimsey (UC Davis) and Michael Ohl (Museum fr Naturkunde, Berlin), who discovered the giant wasp simultaneously and have worked on it in collaboration, named the species after Garuda, the national symbol of Indonesia, a part-human, part-eagle mythical creature known as the King of Birds in Hindu mythology.

Since this species has never been observed alive, nothing is known about its biology or behavior. The males of Megalara garuda are distinctly larger than the females, and bear very long jaws. As can be deduced from other insects with large jaws, it is likely that the males hold the females with it during copulation. It is also possible that they use the jaws for defense.

Sony Xperia S actually powered by tiny robots, new ad reveals

Xperia robot

As part of its new "Made of Imagination" ad campaign, Sony asks kids to imagine how its new Xperia NXT smartphones work, and brings the results to life with acclaimed director Wes Anderson. The first ad, imagined by 8-year-old Jack Ryan, shows us how tiny robots, not chips and circuitry, power the recently-launched Sony Xperia S. They drive around in tiny cars, and can fly through the air to send movies, music and pictures to other devices. Makes more sense to us than any of this nonsense about electrons and radio waves.

Sony's latest series of commercials is a far cry from the creepy Xperia Play ads it produced last year, in which one hapless tourist lost his thumbs to a giant Bugdroid. The new ads form part of a global marketing campaign, which aims to establish the Sony brand in the world of smartphones following last year's Sony Ericsson buy-out.

We've got more tiny robots in the first of Sony's "Made of Imagination" ads after the break. There's also a look behind the scenes in a second video, which shows how these commercials were produced.
