Facebook flips the swtich on its North Carolina data center, cooled with balmy mountain air

Since breaking ground in Western North Carolina some 16 months ago, Facebook has been running at full speed to get its newest data center online. This week, Zuckerberg & Co. flipped the switch. The new facility, located in Forest City, touts the "first major deployment" of the outfit's Open Compute Project web servers and will be the first "live test" of the OPC's outdoor air-cooling design. It tends to get pretty warm around those parts and humidity levels are a bit outside of ideal data center conditions. The Carolina facility will mirror the projected power utilization effectiveness (PUE) of FB's Oregon data center at just a smidge above 1 - somewhere between 1.06 and 1.08 to be exact. In other words, this means the ratio of power used by the structure and the actual power sent to the hardware is almost perfect with minimal energy loss. No matter, it'll still be using plenty of power. A second identical building is slated to open on the site later this year, but for now, hit the source link for a bit more info on the initial launch.

Mother, Daughter Team Building A Health Food Chain - Business ...

Forbes:

Green Acres is now a medium sized organic and all natural foods store based on Barbara?s conviction that ?food is our best medicine.? Originally the store served as an alternative to weekly grocery shopping at the large supermarket chain right across the street. But overtime Green Acres has become a shopping destination as it expanded its product mix, including specialty foods, meats, a deli and baked goods?to about 10,000 SKUs, always sticking to the store mantra of no refined sugars, pesticides, chemical preservatives, or hydrogenated oils. The vitamin and supplement business, which now includes a house brand, accounts for about one-third of revenues.

Barbara Hoffmann attributes the success of Green Acres to its basic product integrity along with its heavy emphasis on customer education and community outreach. Both Green Acres stores host regular product demos and cooking classes. In addition, the Wichita stores provides live music on weekends, hosts a farmer?s market every Saturday to highlight local produce; it also produces several large events featuring nationally known health experts, for which it has to rent space in nearby hotels to accommodate the hundreds of customers who show up. For an upcoming 18th anniversary celebration Barbara estimates they will have 1000 people come through the store?in a metropolitan community of just over 600,000!

Canonical's AWSOME API bridges OpenStack and Amazon clouds, Ubuntu has its head in both

Canonical's AWESOME API bridges OpenStack and Amazon clouds, Ubuntu has its head in both
New features and services that improve Canonical's latest version of Ubuntu seem to keep rolling in. The latest addition being the announcement of its AWSOME proxy service. No, that's not us getting over excited about it, that stands for Any Web Service Over Me, and it includes APIs that smooth the transition to OpenStack for those currently using Amazon's cloud services. Although not open source, Amazon's Web Service has such a large market share, that Canonical clearly wants to make integrating with it as smooth as possible. The AWSOME proxy will only provide basic functionality for the AWS side of things, with users still encouraged to adopt the OpenStack infrastructure for deeper capabilities. Still, if you're currently working with Bezos' platform, and this was the last barrier to hopping aboard the Precise Pangolin ship, you're in luck.

Facebook Ups The Mobile Ante Again; Buys Mobile Loyalty, Rewards Startup TagTile

tagtile-renderingThis just in: Facebook has closed another deal, and as with Instagram it's in mobile again. They have bought TagTile, a mobile-based customer loyalty, management startup, for an undisclosed sum. After the $1 billion, 40-million user blockbuster of Instagram, this looks like a return to the smaller, acqhire buys that Facebook is more known for making. ?We?re happy to confirm that TagTile?s founders are joining Facebook, and that Facebook is acquiring substantially all of the company?s assets. We?ve admired the engineering team?s efforts for some time now and we?re excited to have them join Facebook," the social network said in an emailed statement.

Nike Fuelband Review: A Friendly Reminder to Stop Being Lazy [Fitmodo]

Daniel Craig Says 'Skyfall' Bond 'Not So Broken-Hearted'

'He's much softer and nicer now,' Craig tells MTV News on London set.

When we last left James Bond in "Quantum of Solace," he was on a mission of vengeance after being scorned by a past love. "Quantum" picked right up where "Casino Royale" left off, and even though there was a lot of action in the flick, Bond wasn't Bond: He transformed into a cold, hard character, who audiences never saw crack a smile or have his martini shaken.

Fast-forward four years: Bond has had time to heal and seems to be ready to get back to his old form, even if he has traded in his martini for a Heineken. MTV News visited the London set of Daniel Craig's third Bond flick, "Skyfall," and he told us fans will see him portray a whole new 007.

"He's much softer and nicer now," Craig explained. "It's just different ... hopefully, it's different again from that ['Casino Royale']. There was a story to telling 'Quantum' that we had to finish off and round off. He was hurt and broken-hearted; he's not so broken-hearted. He's on the mend; he's feeling much better."

While little is known about the plot of "Skyfall," the 23rd Bond film, what we do know from the official synopsis is that Bond's loyalty to Judi Dench's character, M, is tested when her past comes back to haunt her. That leaves a lot of holes that need to be filled, but, of course, Craig wouldn't give away too much. After all, it's top-secret information.

Craig said Bond's relationship with M is "a very important part of the film." "There's also the very important relationship he has with the bad guy in the movie [Silva, played by Javier Bardem]. We got Javier to come and do that, which gives the film a richer content, but his relationship with M, they are very close and they basically go on an adventure together, she gets out in the field. Judi, she'll tell you she usually films most of her stuff in the studio like this while we are all off in some wonderful location and she gets to come with us this time."

"Skyfall" hits theaters November 9.

'America's Got Talent' Gets Strong Support From Howard Stern Fans

'He was honest and said exactly what the audience was thinking,' fan Adam Lichtenstein says at show taping.

NEW YORK — Talent-competition show "America's Got Talent" doesn't premiere until May 14, but hundreds of fans came out to see tapings of the show in New York this week. When MTV News spoke to fans waiting to go into an audition taping Thursday afternoon (April 12), most said they were there because they're fans of new judge Howard Stern, and some admitted they'd never even seen "AGT."

"He was honest and said exactly what the audience was thinking, and I think it's going to add a big thing to the show," Adam Lichtenstein, a fan so impressed by Stern he returned for a second day of taping, told MTV News. "Going into the show, we expected Howard to be a little bit mean, but he was honest, exactly like he was on the radio, and he didn't let down."

Since the announcement came in December that Stern will be taking the place of Piers Morgan on the show, viewers have had mixed reactions, but most seem eager to check out his judging style.

Joey Boots, a frequent contributor on Stern's Sirius XM radio show, weighed in on what Howard will be like as a judge. "He's been judging on his show for all these years, but a lot of people haven't tuned in to the Howard Stern show because they hear how raunchy it can be. Now that he's with 'AGT,' people are going to see how honest he is as a judge."

Howard's new place at the table may mean his loyal fanbase could get even bigger. Boots observed people's opinions change at the first show tapings. "I already talked to people before they've gone in talking about, 'Oh, I don't like Howard Stern,' but after they come out they're like, 'I love the guy.' To see that is great and I think that's great for America, it's great for Howard Stern and it's great for 'America's Got Talent.' "

When it came to how Howard might get along with fellow judges Sharon Osbourne and Howie Mandel, Boots admitted things might get rocky.

"I'm sure there's going to be arguing going on because he's going to keep it real, and part of that is disagreeing with each other and I know that there's gonna be a lot of disagreements, but it's good. Hopefully everybody just keeps it real. That's Howard's motto."

With an unprecedented amount of talent-based reality shows hitting the small screen these days, it's Stern's straightforward style that might ultimately keep viewers turning in. "That's what a show like this needs. Not somebody that's going to be pressured like, 'Oh, I'm gonna vote him in because I feel sorry for him.' I don't want somebody voted in favor of because they might be old or something, or it's a little kid. Hey, if you're not talented, get off the stage!"
